Are Indian IT applicants telling more lies?

Due to high levels of staff turnover at Indian IT companies, there is an increasing trend for Indian IT staff to lie on their CVs. The extent of the lying is arguably growing far faster then in South Africa.

This is according to Karen Geldenhuys, MD of ICT-focused recruitment company, Abacus Recruitment.

“Although the percentage of Indian IT workers actually lying on their CVs might not be as high as we are experiencing here, the rate of increase in India seems to be meteoric.”

A recent study conducted by staff vetting firm First Advantage found that “Education discrepancies” and other misinformation increased by 80% in the first quarter compared to last year.

“This is quite a worrying increase,” said Geldenhuys. “Although we believe that at least half of CVs in this country contain lies, we are not experiencing anything near an 80% in CVs containing lies.”

‘Interestingly, what a lot of candidates are doing is claiming in their CVs that they have worked for one of India’s big three IT companies – Infosys, Tata Consulting Services or Wipro. What they are doing is trying to create the impression that there is a narrowing talent pool,” said Geldenhuys.

The latest figures from WiPro, reported in UK-based IT online publication, www.contractorUK, show that in the January to March period, staff turnover leapt a reported 18.5 per cent, of which three per cent accounted for “weeding out CV liars”.
